SOAR Overview

Northside is pleased to have a school wide system for behaviors called Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS). PBIS is a school wide initiative that seeks to create a safer and more positive school culture by first clearly defining behavioral expectations for all students. NIS developed a behavioral matrix, which clearly outlines behavioral expectations in all areas of the school for students. Our PBIS program focuses on four expectations as summarized in our acronym SOAR, which stands for Safe, Organized, Accountable, and Respectful. We use the phrase “SOAR with the Northside Four” as a way to remind students to be safe, organized, accountable, and respectful in all settings at school.

Acknowledging Positive Behavior

A key piece of PBIS is acknowledging students who are demonstrating positive behavior and not merely recognizing students for misbehavior (warnings, detentions, calls home, etc.). Here at Northside, all staff members will be distributing SOAR slips (red tickets) to individual students who are doing a remarkable job following school rules/expectations. Students collect SOAR Slips and turn them in weekly SOAR Swap to earn incentives. Additionally, five students per grade are randomly selected and are eligible for a SOAR Winning Ticket to select an incentive. These weekly winners are based on perfect attendance or total work completion in alternating weeks. Other incentives and drawings take place periodically in addition to weekly drawings.
