Special Education
Special education is a term used to describe services provided to students who qualify in at least one of the thirteen federally defined areas of special education (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). Students who meet criteria as well as show a need for specially designed instruction receive support from teachers licensed to teach students with disabilities. Services provided are based on the individual need(s) of a student and are determined at an Individual Education Planning meeting (IEP).
A great resource for families in preparing for IEP’s is found in the IEP 101 Flyer.
Vision for Special Education
Exceptional learners are those who require special education and related services if they are to realize their full potential. They require special education because they differ markedly from most students in one or more of the following ways: They may have intellectual disabilities, learning or attention disabilities, emotional or behavioral disorders, physical disabilities, disorders of communication, autism, traumatic brain injury, impaired hearing, impaired sight or gifts or talents.
The Milton special education team will continue to evaluate services being provided to students with disabilities in an effort to find the most efficient and effective way to meet the unique needs of our students. Best practice and research will be the foundation of our instructional practices in an effort to meet the unique needs of our students with disabilities.
The single most important goal of special education is finding and capitalizing on exceptional students’ abilities.
If you have questions about Special Education in the School District of Milton, please call 608-868-9221 and ask to speak to Mary Lang or Student Services Director Susan Probst.
