Special Accommodation Plans

504 Plans
The “504” in “Section 504 Plan” refers to the Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. These references specify that no one with a disability can be excluded from participating in federally funded programs or activities, including elementary, secondary or postsecondary schooling. Students who meet criteria for a 504 Plan will have a “physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activity”. The impairments may include physical impairment, illness or injury, communicable diseases, learning problems and/or chronic conditions like asthma, allergies and diabetes.
Accommodations and/or modifications provided are based on the individual need(s) of the student and are determined at a 504 Plan Meeting.
Vision for Section 504
According to Section 504, school districts have a duty to identify every qualified student with an impairment who might need discrimination protection under Section 504. Consequently, staff strives to have constant vigilance to identify students who may need Section 504 protections by conducting child find activities, posting public notices, contact with representatives of private schools, providing early childhood screenings and monitoring a student’s progress.
The School District of Milton takes steps to notify parents of our duty to provide services to students with disabilities very seriously.
The School District of Milton Student Services Team consisting of School Counselors, School Psychologists, School Social Workers who conduct pre-placement evaluation with materials tailored to assess particular areas of educational needs. A group of decision makers, familiar with the student, work together to determine initial eligibility and accommodation plans if eligible.
Some modifications and/or accommodations may be: wheelchair ramps, blood sugar monitoring, extra set of textbooks, allergy (example: peanut) free lunch environment, tape recorder or keyboard for taking notes, extended time for tests and/or assignments, bathroom breaks or separate setting for test taking.
Our goal is to provide what our students with disabilities need to have an opportunity to perform at the same level as their peers.
