Special education is a term used to describe services provided to students who qualify in at least one of the thirteen federally identified areas. (Individual With Disabilities Education Act). Students with disabilities, who need special education and related services, are found eligible when they meet the IDEA definition of a "child with a disability" in combination with state laws and regulations. Students found eligible for special education are provided a free, appropriate public education and are entitled to receive specialized instruction, which could include modifications to the content of the regular education curriculum, or modifications in the manner in which the curriculum is provided. Eligible students are also entitled to the related services necessary for them to benefit from their instructional program. Included also are physical, occupational and speech therapy, as well as supports such as counseling, health services, and specialized physical education. Additional personnel, as deemed appropriate, may also be part of a student's program.
The school district emphasizes a team approach to the education of all students, regardless of need. Should a parent/guardian have a concern regarding the education of a student with a disability, they are encouraged to meet with the team of individuals involved in the education of their child in order to answer any questions and/or resolve any areas of concern or dispute.
If you are a parent of a child with a disability, the Wisconsin WSPEI project may be of service to you. The WSPEI project helps parents navigate the IEP process by building partnerships between parents and schools so that students have the best educational experience. Kate Everhart is the District’s family engagement liaison who attended the WSPEI trainings. Kate will be assisting SDM in developing family engagement activities and supports which welcome, honor, and connect all families to student learning. She promotes positive working relationships between families, students, staff and community agencies and encourages communication for problem solving. We are excited to have this new partnership for our families.
